U Street has a reputation as the hip and urban, yet sophisticated neighborhood preferred by everyone from college students to business professionals. It’s one of Washington D.C.’s most historic and diverse communities, encompassed by luxury rentals. This section of the city is as vibrant as ever, anchored by the lively 14th Street corridor to the west and the refurbished Howard Theatre bordering the Shaw neighborhood to the east, where a towering sculpture in reverence to Ellington stands.
Food is eclectic and exciting. One of the best ways to experience the food in the neighborhood is on a Forks Food Tour. From soul food to Italian to the world-famous Ben’s Chili Bowl and its signature half-smoke sausage, the area's a cornucopia of eats to be excited about. And uniquely, on the eastern end, you’ll find a handful of homey eateries in an area known as “Little Ethiopia” for its concentration of residents from that country. If you’ve never eaten with your hands before, now’s your chance.
Cap off your U Street adventure with a scoop or two from Ice Cream Jubilee, a homegrown ice cream shop with fun and creative flavors. Plus, there’s a Saturday farmers’ market at U and 14th streets, and plenty of coffee shops to get your caffeine fix. It’s both historic and colorful, boasting some of the richest culture of the city and full of bars, restaurants, and boutiques – as well as plenty of DC locals who come to enjoy the culture and the people-watching.

This place was great except for a couple major things. The location can't be beat, right around the corner from U Street station, a block from Trader Joe's, and my favorite ice cream place, Jeni's. It's up high so you do walk up some short flights of stairs, but it's worth it for the reduced sound from the street. It was very clean and comfortable. Except...the queen bed was crazy squeaky. Turns out some box spring slats were broken. I wouldn't expect a cleaning crew to lift up every mattress to check the condition of a box spring, so no worries, we let Sojourn know, moved the mattress to the floor, box spring up against the wall, and my daughter slept fine. Bigger problem was that maintenance came in to check box spring and left the door open, the dead bolt extended out so the door didn't close. This was very disconcerting when we got home. To their credit, Sojourn apologized and made it right by giving us a discount but leaving a door unlocked during someone's stay is a big error.Show more Sojourn is great at returning messages promptly. Also great that we were not expected to do house cleaning and such, so we were free to go in the morning.Show more Overall it was an ok stay. Easy to find and host was very easy to communicate with. The apt was initially quite dirty when we checked in (dirty washing machine, foul smelling microwave oven, socks from previous occupants found in one of the beds, vent grate in the bathroom completely clogged with dust which I had to clean). The host was apologetic, had another crew clean the place, and gave us a discount on our fee. The queen bed mattress is sunken in the middle and squeaking, and needs replacing. Location was fantastic, with close proximity to Metro, transit buses, grocery store, and restaurants.Show more
