Heurich became the second largest employer in DC, surpassed only by the government. Heurich used his abundant wealth to build a palatial home with his second wife. Well, it turns out that art museum thefts aren’t exclusive to Hollywood films; sometimes they occur right in your neighborhood, sometimes the stolen masterpieces turn up in unexpected places, and sometimes the thefts are executed to teach the museum a lesson.&nbsp;Located in DC’s prestigious Dupont Circle neighborhood, The Phillips Collection is home to more than 5,000 pieces in styles ranging from French impressionism and American modernism to contemporary art. It is regarded as the nation’s oldest modern art museum.&nbsp;In January 1983, the typically quiet museum was anything but; instead, it became the center of an art heist, bustling with commotion and confusion. A museum guard became suspicious when he noticed a man leaving the museum with his arms wrapped around a bunched-up tweed coat. The Indonesian Embassy chose to do just that when they unveiled a statue of Saraswati, the epochal Hindu representation of education, on their grounds, simultaneously declaring their partnership with the United States while expressing their adoration of the United States’ 44th president.&nbsp;The predominantly white statue stands 16 feet tall and features gold accents. The Goddess has four arms. Her front left hand plays a musical instrument, her back right hand holds a manuscript symbolizing knowledge, and her back-left hand holds akshamala, or prayer beads, which represent the continuous process of learning. The centerpiece is a sizeable swan, reminding onlookers the difference between right and wrong.&nbsp;Arguably the most notable art of the statue is the three young children sitting at its base reading a book. Out of some 160 monuments and memorials in the capital region, just over 50 statues include women. A local artist and an ambitious project answered the call to change that.&nbsp;The DowntownDC BID and the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities partnered with artist Charles Bergen to reimagine nine nonfunctioning call boxes as public art installations. Throughout the 19th century, cast-iron call boxes served as an early emergency alert system predating telephones and two-way radio systems. These call boxes are still scattered across the city, but they haven’t been in operation since the 1970s. Bergen worked with urban historian Mara Cherkasky to identify nine prominent women throughout history for the project. The esteemed group of female trailblazers includes gospel street musician Flora Molton and expressionist painter Alma Thomas. Today the park offers a welcomed reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding city streets; however, its history depicts a dark and dismal past.&nbsp;Lafayette Park has stood for over 200 years, undergoing many changes in identity. It has been used as a racetrack, zoo, graveyard, barracks for soldiers during the War of 1812, and a slave market. The pristine park is also the site of the murder of Francis Scott Key’s son, Philip Barton Key II.&nbsp;On February 27, 1859, Daniel Sickles, a former New York congressman and later a prominent Union general, shot and killed the national anthem’s songwriter’s son after learning of an affair between the younger Key and his wife, Teresa Sickles. While the stately residence symbolizes power, patriotism, and the American people, it has also been connected to the occult and is considered by many to be quite haunted, with countless sightings of former presidents, first ladies, and White House staff members.&nbsp;One of the most frequent ghostly sightings is that of First Lady Abigail Adams. Adams used to hang laundry in the East Room, the warmest and driest room of the White House. Her apparition has been reportedly seen walking toward the East Room dressed in a lace shawl and cap with outstretched arms like she’s carrying laundry. President Andrew Jackson has been said to haunt the Rose Room as well as the halls of the president’s chambers. The stately hotel has been an espionage haven for decades, dating back to World War II and continuing into recent years.&nbsp;In 1942, German spy George John Dasch checked into room 351 with hopes of meeting with FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to divulge his spy mission, Operation Pastorius. Such curiosity explains how Brown learned of the rickey, the cocktail that would eventually be designated Washington’s official drink.&nbsp;In the mid-1800s, a bartender named George A. Williamson concocted the rickey at a well-known bar called Shoomaker’s, situated off Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The cocktail was a favorite of Colonel Joseph Kyle Rickey, a Democratic lobbyist and regular Shoomaker’s patron who was often credited with co-creating the drink.&nbsp;Thanks to Derek Brown, who promoted the rickey in a multitude of ways, the rickey was officially declared Washington’s “native cocktail” in 2011. In fact, dissonance between lawmakers and the media dates to the early history of our nation.&nbsp;On February 28, 1890, Charles Kincaid, a newspaper correspondent for the Louisville Times, fatally shot former Congressman William Taulbee of Kentucky. The two men had had a tumultuous history since 1887 when Kincaid wrote a story accusing Taulbee of an extramarital affair.&nbsp;On the day of the shooting, House doorkeepers had to separate the two men. Taulbee reportedly warned the reporter to arm himself. Kincaid later met up with Taulbee and fatally shot him on the east staircase of the House Wing of the Capitol. The media widely covered the egregious event. The site of the Supreme Court, however, was not always a place of distinction and justice. In fact, it has quite a long and sordid history.&nbsp;After the British torched the US Capitol during the War of 1812, Congress built a brick building to serve as a temporary capitol. The temporary building, now regarded as the Old Capitol, was soon transformed into a boardinghouse. The outbreak of the Civil War, however, left it abandoned and dilapidated. The government removed the fence surrounding the building, replaced the wooden slits above the windows with iron bars, and converted it into a prison.&nbsp;Many prestigious individuals served prison time here, including Confederate generals, Northern political prisoners, and spies. Wirt holds the title of longest serving attorney generalin United States history, and he is also credited with turning the position into one of national importance. In 1853, Wirt’s son-in-law built a massive family vault near the highest point of the cemetery, so large that it remains the biggest and most visible monument on the grounds.&nbsp;Following the puzzling 2003 phone call, the cemetery manager decided to probe further. The lock had been removed from the door and the vault had indeed been vandalized.&nbsp;It was eventually determined that Robert L. White had collected Wirt’s skull, adding to his bizarre collection of 40-some skulls. When White died in 2003, the appraiser of his estate found an old metal box painted with gold block letters reading “Hon. Wm.
